Why I Joined Nexstar: Calaway Plumbing and Heating in Vaughan, ON

How did you get started in the plumbing industry?

Looking back—I was unemployed at the time—I had called a plumber to my home to fix a problem with a sink and I found the work he was doing quite interesting. He noticed that I had an interest in what he was doing and informed me that the company was hiring. I immediately went to seek employment and I started in the commercial construction. I started in the trade in 2001, and shortly after writing and receiving my Masters Plumbing Licence in 2006, I opened up Calaway Mechanical.

During the operation of Calaway Mechanical, I was quick to learn that the profit earnings were at a low margin and the money was very hard to collect from construction and contracting companies. I thought there must be a better way to operate this business. In 2010, I came across Nexstar, but it wasn’t until 2013 that I found an immediate need for Nexstar’s service. I founded Calaway Plumbing and Heating in 2013; in the interim I was running Calaway Mechanical at the same time. At the end of 2015, I dissolved Calaway Mechanical and decided it would be best to focus on the plumbing and heating residential service business. Recently, I have been in the process of rebuilding Calaway Plumbing and Heating following the Nexstar model and utilizing the coaches and services that Nexstar provides.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

My favourite thing about the industry I am in is being able to help people and provide excellent quality service in times of need. Most of my clients call me when they are facing an issue they cannot fix themselves, so it is fulfilling to know I can put my clients’ minds at ease, by providing options and solutions. The client will know the job is done right the first time and when future needs arise, they know they can count on Calaway Plumbing and Heating.

Why did you join Nexstar?

In 2013, I realized I needed help and my best option was joining Nexstar. I needed help with the service side of my new business. I wanted to build my company from the ground up utilizing a proven model for this particular industry. It took some time to learn and understand the culture, materials, steps and procedures in which Nexstar has implemented.

How does being a Nexstar member benefit you?

Working with Nexstar, I have come to realize this organization is amazing. I have weekly meetings with various individual coaches, including Rob Buckley and Melanie Tauring, who assist me with items such as customer service representative questions, marketing, business management and training. Working with these individual specialists, I have come to trust their coaching ability and view them each as mentors. I feel these individuals are invested in the success of my businesses and counsel me in my coaching calls. Another benefit is the longstanding friendships and additional mentor relationships that I have built with other Nexstar members. Knowing I can call a Nexstar member, who may have faced the same challenges as I am currently, gives me comfort that things will work out. In addition, I find the accessibility of the Nexstar website and content extremely valuable to refer to when faced with challenges.

Nexstar assists me in planning both short- and long-term goals for my business. In my dealings with Nexstar, I have been able to view my business differently by being asked difficult questions at the right time. In turn, this allows me to look objectively at situations as they arise, enabling me to think more strategically about growth opportunities in my industry.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about becoming a member?

If you are already on this website, you need to trust yourself and come and join an organization that will lead you to greater success than you ever thought imaginable. Nexstar has the formula and the content to guide you and bring your business to a new level. The only thing stopping you from this greater power is you.

You need to ask yourself: Why are you looking for help? Are you looking to grow your business? Are you seeking staffing help? Are you looking for more time to spend with your family? Do you want your life back? If you have answered yes to most of these questions, this organization will guide you to achieve all your goals and dreams in your profession. However, it is up to you to put in the hard work and keep an open mind to new endeavours. Coachability is a key factor to the success of what Nexstar has to offer.
