Time to Power Up! Q&A with Kristen Munn
We caught up with Kristen recently to discuss her AHR Expo 2025 topic, and the importance behind it.
Q: Thank you for sharing a bit about your upcoming presentation, Kristen. What are you most excited about as you look forward to AHR Expo 2025?
I am most excited for this incredible opportunity to represent Nexstar and women in the trades.
Q: Your topic – Power Up Your Leadership: Communication Techniques for Success – is an important one. Why did you choose to speak on this?
This topic frequently comes up in conversation while I coach owners and general managers at our Nexstar member shops. Often, leadership frustrations stem from employees with good intentions who lack clear expectations or accountability. Addressing these issues is crucial for building effective teams.
Q: And what will you touch on during your presentation?
Some of the key points include setting clear expectations, having regular individual conversations with those whom you lead, and embracing accountability.
Q: Digging a bit deeper here, please describe how leadership and communication skills are intertwined?
Absolutely! I believe that often our challenges with leadership are linked to our own communication skills and the quality of conversations we are having with our team. So, to me, they are very much intertwined.
Q: Who is your topic geared for, Kristen? Managers, leaders, frontline team members?
This topic is geared primarily to managers and leaders, though the communication techniques shared will be valuable for everyone and can be applied both inside and outside of the workplace.
Q: What are the key takeaways attendees will gather from your discussion?
I hope attendees will understand the importance of self-reflection when dealing with a “difficult” or low-performing employee. Often, improving communication can transform these employees into high performers and foster stronger relationships.
Q: As a leader in the trades, and coming from a family with a legacy in serving their community with best-in-class HVAC expertise, how important is it to establish clear, concise communications?
Clear, concise communication is essential in every aspect of leadership and service. My grandfather, who founded our family HVAC business in 1945, taught us a key principle: “If you have a clear understanding up front, you won’t have miscommunication in the end.” While he applied this to customer relationships, I’ve found it equally impactful in fostering effective leadership and driving performance within a team.
Q: How many times have you been to AHR?
This will be my first time attending the AHR Expo! I’m excited to see everything it offers, and I’m honored to contribute to the event.
Q: We’re grateful to Women in HVACR for their partnership and allowing you to have the mic at AHR! What are some of ways you’ve seen Women in HVACR blazing trails to support women in the trades?
Women in HVACR is exceptional at enhancing representation in the industry through impactful initiatives such as newsletters, events, and featuring women speakers at the AHR Expo. Representation is crucial because it fosters connection—people relate more easily to those who share similar experiences. For women in the trades, this connection is especially significant, as it provides relatable role models and support from others facing similar challenges.
Q: Anything you’d like to add as you look ahead to the big show in February?
I’m looking forward to meeting new people and am especially excited to see our Nexstar members show their support at the event!
Thank you, Kristen! We’re so excited for your presentation in February.
