Monthly Coach Highlight – Shane Rau, Accounting Coach

This month, we sat down with Nexstar’s Accounting Coach, Shane Rau, to chat about what brought him to Nexstar, what he does on a day-to-day basis, and what he likes to do in his free time.

Q: Where and when did you get your start in the trades?
A:My first formal exposure to the trades was when I began as an accountant for Nexstar.

Q: What brought you to Nexstar?
A: Before Nexstar, I was a manager of the flooring department at Menards. I had an accounting degree and wanted to use it, so I applied for an accounting position here at Nexstar.

Q: What are some career milestones that have been important in guiding you to your role as a coach?
A: Getting my Certified Management Accountant certification was key in growing my knowledge and skillset as an accountant. Working my way up in Nexstar and becoming the Controller was another key to my development. Finally, taking on the role of Accounting Coach was key in learning the industry and the life of our members.

Q: What does your typical day look like as a coach?
A: My typical day as a coach starts with going through any emails that I didn’t have time to follow up with on the previous day. I then enter any Profit Report information I’ve received and send out reminders to companies who have fallen behind on their monthly Profit Report. After that, my day consists of calls that deal with anything that has to do with members’ day-to-day accounting, Profit Report questions, and Business Planning Workshop. Outside of those calls, I follow up on any additional questions or concerns I get throughout the day.

Q: What’s the best part of your job, and why?
A: The best part of my job is when a company who was struggling takes the advice we give them and turns things around. Another great part is when an accountant has consistent calls with me and I get to watch them really grow. They can get to the point where our calls become their reports on numbers, versus us troubleshooting together or requests for me to analyze their numbers.

Q: What are some of your passions?
A: A: I love my family and anything to do with the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, hiking, canoeing, and camping are all things that my family and I love to do!
